Build In Added
Idea Value By Developing Robust Project Objectives
by Lynda Curtin, The Opportunity
Thinker
Objectives should clearly state what you could
expect to experience as a result of implementing the idea. What
value will you gain? All of the project work should then be planned
to deliver the expected results. It is helpful to keep the project
statement visible for the team as objectives are developed. Keep a
tight focus.Think at a higher level when
developing objectives and you will deliver unexpected added value
to the organization.
Be careful not to confuse
writing objectives with developing a list of work activities – a
to-do list.
Tip:
| Write
objectives in past tense, as if they have already been
accomplished. This will help motivate the team members to
deliver their project work. |
Examples
of Project Objectives:
At the end of this project we
will have:
- Maximized
existing production capacity in Europe
- Developed
new expertise in e-commerce
- Launched
a new product category 9 months ahead of the competition
- Launched
an obsolescence plan to minimize write offs
- Cannibalized
a product line that represents 30% of our revenue
- Laid
the foundation for phase two and three of this project
- Opened
up three new customer distribution channels
- Increased
the technology skills of all of our employees
- Broadened
our customer base to include Generation Why
- Converted
to environmentally friendly packaging
- Capitalized
on the consumer trend of Boomer Panic
- Discontinued
the bottom producing 30% of our products
- Financed
the acquisition with existing cash flow
- Enabled
our customers to communication directly with us 24 hours a day,
7 days a week from anywhere in the world
- Reduced
our reliance on ad rates set by TV ratings
Take time to develop the skill to write robust
project objectives and you will boost your project success rate and
add surprising new value to your organization.
